America turns 250 today — happy Independence Day to everyone celebrating far from home.

Getting settled

Can I drive in Germany on my US license or an IDP?

Quick answer

No — a US license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) is **not** enough for a SOFA-status driver in Germany. SOFA members and their dependents must pass a test based on **AE Reg 190-1** to get a **USAREUR driver's license** before they can drive legally. You'll also need German car insurance with an ICC card before driving your own car.

The common mistake

A lot of arriving families assume their stateside license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) covers them to drive in Germany. It doesn't — not for SOFA-status personnel. An IDP is a translation of your existing license; it doesn't satisfy the separate USAREUR requirement, and driving without the right license is a real risk, not a technicality.

What you actually need: the USAREUR license

SOFA-status service members and their dependents must obtain a USAREUR driver's license to drive legally in Germany. You get it by passing a test based on AE Reg 190-1 — the US Army Europe traffic regulation — available through your installation.

This applies whether you're active duty, a dependent spouse, or otherwise SOFA-status. Check with your installation for exactly where to test.

Insurance before you drive

Before you drive your own car (POV) in Germany, you need Kfz-Versicherung (German car insurance) with an ICC (insurance confirmation) card. Line this up alongside your USAREUR license — you need both, not just one.

If you're staying long-term or leaving SOFA status

If you eventually want a permanent German license — for example if you leave SOFA status — there's a separate US-to-German license conversion process. That's a different topic with its own rules; see the license-conversion guide for that path.

Frequently asked

Is an International Driving Permit (IDP) enough to drive in Germany?
No — not for SOFA-status drivers. You still need the USAREUR driver's license, which you get by passing a test based on AE Reg 190-1.
Do spouses and other dependents need the USAREUR license too?
Yes. The requirement applies to SOFA-status dependents, not just the service member.
What do I need before driving my own car in Germany?
A USAREUR driver's license, plus German car insurance (Kfz-Versicherung) with an ICC card.
