EFMP screening: prepare for an overseas assignment review

Give the reviewing office a clear picture of your family’s medical and educational needs. Ask how those needs will be considered at the proposed destination before making travel commitments.

Last recorded review: 2026-07-28. Requirements can change; confirm with the linked source or responsible office. Boris is independent of the DoD.

Separate enrollment from assignment review

Military OneSource explains that qualifying active-duty family medical or educational needs require EFMP enrollment. Its enrollment guide identifies medical and educational forms and supporting documents as applicable. An enrollment decision is not the same as confirmation that a particular overseas assignment can support a family member.

Prepare the questions and records

Ask your service’s EFMP office which documents and appointments are needed for your proposed assignment. Describe current care and educational support accurately; do not leave out a need because an online post calls it minor.

If support is uncertain, ask about the next process

Use the responsible office to clarify any identified gap and your service’s review or assignment options. Ask about the route and deadline shown in your actual decision; do not rely on a universal appeal timetable. For civilian or contractor families, confirm your employer’s process rather than assuming military EFMP procedures apply.
