Bringing a pet from the United States to Germany

Use the current USDA country page with your vet before booking. Confirm the right certificate, vaccination sequence and carrier arrangements for your animal and travel dates.

Use the current certificate route

USDA APHIS lists Germany’s entry requirements and updated certificate rules from October 2026. Dogs, cats, ferrets and birds do not all follow one checklist. Tell your vet the species, travel date, accompanying person and whether the move involves a sale or transfer.

Have the vet check the sequence

APHIS requires the identification and rabies record to meet its travel sequence and validity rules. Ask the vet to check the microchip, vaccination history and the earliest eligible travel date before scheduling the certificate.

Confirm endorsement and the airline separately

USDA endorsement normally applies to the export certificate, with a specific exception for qualifying U.S. Army Veterinary Service military veterinarians. Do not assume every vet working near a military installation falls within that exception. Ask your vet which route applies. The carrier can have separate booking and document requirements.
